URBANA, Ohio – Fairmont State outlasted Urbana in a defensive battle on Thursday evening at the Grimes Center in Urbana, 67-57. The game featured 13 lead changes and three ties.
Fairmont State opened up a 35-28 advantage in the opening half of the game, shooting 53.8 percent from the field (14-of-26) in the first 20 minutes of action.
To open the second half, FSU went on a quick 5-0 spurt to give the Falcons their largest lead of the day at 40-28 and led the remainder of the evening.
Despite struggling from the field in the second half, shooting just 10-of-29 (34.5%), the Falcons finished the evening shooting 43.6 percent from the field with six threes. FSU struggled from the free throw line at just 61.9 percent (13-21).
The Falcons held a 43-35 advantage on the glass, including 15 offensive rebounds.
Fairmont State (11-4, 7-2 MEC) got a team-high 16 points and five rebounds from
Vonte Montgomery.
Caleb Davis recorded a double-double for the Falcons with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Andrew Emrick also reached double-figures with 12 points to go with seven rebounds.
In addition, junior point guard
Jason Jolly also became the 47th player in Fairmont State men's basketball history to go over 1,000 career points – finishing the game with eight points and a team-high three assists.
The Falcons won the game on the defensive end of the floor, limiting Urbana to just 39.7 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three. The Blue Knights were also limited to just 5-of-9 from the free throw line.
Abdul Kanu led Urbana (4-10, 3-6 MEC) with 12 points and five rebounds in the loss. Malik Jacobs also chipped in 11 and Ethan Snapp tallied 10 to give the Blue Knights a trio of double-figure scorers. AJ Washington pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
FSU will now travel to Northeast Ohio for a showdown with Notre Dame College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
