Urbana Rallies Past Fairmont State, 86-77

URBANA, Ohio -- Urbana used a 26-13 scoring advantage in the third quarter to rally past Fairmont State, 86-77, on Thursday evening at the Grimes Center in Urbana.
 
Fairmont State took a 43-39 advantage to the locker room after scoring 11 of the final 14 points of the opening half. Brooke Kurucz scored 18 of her 20 points in the opening 20 minutes of play as the Falcons shot 50 percent from behind the arc (5-of-10) in the opening half.
 
However, Urbana scored 11-straight points to open the third quarter and led the rest of the game. Urbana shot 52.6 percent from the field in the third quarter, including a 4-of-8 performance from behind the arc (50%).
 
In fact, Urbana shot over 50 percent from the floor in the first three quarters of the game. The Blue Knights finished the evening shooting 47.5 percent after managing just 27 percent in the fourth quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, Fairmont State cut Urbana's double-digit third quarter lead to just one (70-69) with 5:27 to play after opening the final quarter on a 13-5 scoring run. However, a quick 7-0 spurt by Urbana ended Fairmont's comeback bid as the Falcons managed just six points in the final 5:27 of the game.
 
Fairmont State (7-7, 3-6 MEC) got a team-high 22 points from Sierra Kotchman, as the freshman did most of her damage from the free throw line with a 12-of-12 performance. Kurucz also recorded a 20-point scoring performance for the Falcons with 20 points on 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Kelli Jo Harrison rounded out the Fairmont State players in double-figures with 18 points and 11 rebounds to record her fifth double-double of the season.
 
Fairmont State shot just 37.7 percent from the field in the loss, including a 1-of-9 showing from behind the arc in the second half.
 
Urbana (8-5, 6-3 MEC) had four players in double-figures on the evening, led by Stefanie Davis with 26. Sylvia Hudson and Jazmyn Haley also chipped in 17 apiece.
 
The Falcons will now head to northeast Ohio for a matchup with Notre Dame College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
