FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Five players reached double figures to lead Fairmont State to a 91-69 victory over UVa-Wise on Thursday night inside Joe Retton Arena. The Falcons used a strong performance from behind the arc with 13 three-pointers and also recorded 22 assists on 35 made baskets in the win.
With the win, Fairmont State improves to 9-4 overall, including 5-2 in Mountain East Conference play. UVa-Wise slips below .500 at 6-7 overall and 4-3 in league play.
In addition to the strong offensive performance, the Falcons also used solid defense in the opening half to hold the Cavs to just 34 percent from the field - opening up a 48-28 advantage at the break.
FSU was paced by 15 points apiece from
Vonte Montgomery,
Caleb Davis and
R.J. Hutcherson. Davis recorded a double-double by also pulling down 11 rebounds. The Falcons also got 14 points from Kenzie Malko and 11 from
D'Ondre Stockman.
Jason Jolly also finished with seven points, and now needs just 11 to go over 1,000 career points as a junior.
For the game, the Falcons shot nearly 50 percent from the field at 49.3 percent (35-71).
The Cavs got 18 points apiece from Michal Seals and Taiwo Badmus in the loss. Chance Sheffey also chipped in 12.
UVa-Wise shot just under 43 percent from the field (31-of-73), but made just three 3-pointers in the game.
FSU will return to action on Saturday when Concord comes to town for a 4 p.m. tip inside Joe Retton Arena.
