Falcons Lock Up MEC Playoff Spot With 2-1 Win on Senior Day

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State women's soccer clinched a berth in the Mountain East Conference Women's Soccer Tournament with its 2-1 victory over Wheeling Jesuit on senior day at Duvall-Rosier Field on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 34 minutes into the game and held off Wheeling Jesuit's late game comeback attempt to earn the victory.

Prior to the game, Fairmont State honored its four seniors; Shawna Graham, Breana Wright, Abigail Pasierb and Samantha Buffey.
 
Rachel Phillips opened the scoring in the game with a header goal off a corner kick by (Breana) Wright in the 17th minute of the game. The goal was the third of the season for Phillips.
 
Just 16 minutes later, Fairmont State converted on a second corner kick when Ella Wilson hit Abigail Fowler with a short pass from the corner kick that set up Fowler's shot from the right side. The goal was Fowler's fifth of the season.
 
Fairmont State held a 9-2 shot advantage in the opening half and ended the game with a 14-9 advantage. The Falcons had 10 shots on goal, compared to just three for Wheeling Jesuit.
 
Wheeling's Emily Hartley cut Fairmont's lead to 2-1 in the 84th minute with a goal after driving down the center of the field. The goal was Hartley's team-leading seventh of the season.
 
Hartley added one more shot for Wheeling Jesuit in the 87th minute that was blocked by the Falcon defense.
 
Fairmont State's Abigail Johnson recorded five shots in the game, including four that were on goal and required a save by Wheeling's Megan Herter.
 
Fairmont State goalkeeper Isabelle Vaccari improved to 7-5-3 on the season after recording a save on two of the three shots on goal that she faced.
 
Fairmont State (7-5-3, 5-4-2 MEC) will return to action on Wednesday evening with a showdown against MEC South leading West Virginia Wesleyan. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start.
