FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision against league-leading West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday evening at Duvall-Rosier Field. Wesleyan's Natalie Prater netted her eighth goal of the season in the 105
th minute to break the tie and give the Bobcats the victory.
With the win, West Virginia Wesleyan improves to 12-1-2 (10-0-2 MEC). Fairmont State falls to 7-6-3 (5-5-2 MEC).
The game had been a showcase of defense for the first 104 minutes of play in a game that featured just nine shots on goal between the two teams. The Bobcats had six shots on goal compared to just three for the Falcons.
Louise Welch had the first scoring attempt in the second overtime period with a shot in the 104
th minute that was turned away by Ashlee Schumacher of the Bobcats. Fairmont State's only other shot in overtime came during the first extra period when
Cameryn Ciresi's shot was blocked by the Wesleyan defense in the 94
th minute.
Midway through the second half, Fairmont State appeared to take a 1-0 lead on a shot by
Kylee Altland, but the goal was taken off the board because of a goalie interference call.
Welch, Altland and
Kaitlin Smith provided the only shots on goal in the game for the Falcons. Prater and Makatlyn Tucker each had two shots on goal for the Bobcats.
Isabelle Vaccari (7-6-3) turned away five of the six shots she faced in the solid performance.
Fairmont State will wrap up the regular season on Saturday against Glenville State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on the road.
