FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State held off a late surge by West Virginia State to down the Yellow Jackets 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Joe Retton Arena (25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 15-13). The match totaled 14 ties and seven lead changes, including six ties and a lead change in the fifth set.
With the win, Fairmont State moves to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in Mountain East Conference play. The Yellow Jackets drop to 14-7 overall and 3-3 in the league.
In the fifth set, WV State grabbed an 8-5 lead before the teams changed ends. Following the change and a Fairmont State timeout, the Falcons scored 10 of the next 15 points to rally past the Yellow Jackets in the set.
Taylor Wisniewski, who finished the match with three kills and five blocks, was in on the final three points for the Falcons with a block assists and a pair of kills.
Rebecca Feeney paced the Falcons in the victory with 16 kills and eight total blocks (three solo).
Emma Mobley also chipped in 15 kills, 14 digs and three block assists.
Julia DiPaola was the third Fairmont State player to reach double-figures with 14 kills and 11 digs.
In addition to Feeney's eight blocks in the victory, Bri Washburn and Wisniewski also chipped in five apiece as the Falcons held a 16-13 advantage in blocks during the victory. West Virginia State held a 13-5 advantage in service aces.
Megan Clerico recorded a match-high 25 digs, and Lily Keber paced the Falcon offense with 26 assists and seven digs.
Kelsey Moeller also recorded a double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs.
Jenna Dufresne and Taylor Allbritten paced the Yellow Jackets in the match with 16 and 15 kills, respectively.
The Falcons will return to action on Tuesday evening with a non-conference matchup at Davis & Elkins College. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m.
