FAIRMONT, W.Va. – West Virginia State overcame 10 ties and 13 lead changes to edge Fairmont State, 84-78, on Monday evening in Mountain East Conference action at Joe Retton Arena. The Yellow Jackets closed out the win by outscoring the Falcons 12-2 over the final five minutes of play.
The loss drops Fairmont's record to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in MEC play. WVSU improves to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league games.
Both teams struggled from the field during the matchup, with Fairmont State shooting 36 percent from the field (27-of-75), and West Virginia State shooting just 35.5 percent from the field (27-of-76). However, the Yellow Jackets held an 8-4 advantage in 3-pointers, and forced Fairmont State into 23 turnovers in the victory. The Yellow Jackets scored 24 points off turnovers.
Fairmont State outrebounded West Virginia State by a 54-48 margin, which included 18 offensive rebounds for the Falcons.
Rachel Laskody led the effort for Fairmont State with a career-high 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Brooke Kurucz also added 10 points and six rebounds while
Erin Danik added nine points and six boards off the bench. Eleven different players scored for the Falcons.
Jordan Miller led all scorers with 25 points for West Virginia State. Alexandra Jackson netted 17 in the win and Anesha Harmon added 14. Denisha Bowman grabbed nine rebounds and had four blocks for the Yellow Jackets.
The teams combined for 51 personal fouls on the evening, with each team attempting 27 shots at the charity stripe.
Fairmont State will now be idle until Wednesday, Nov. 28 when Glenville State visits Joe Retton Arena for an MEC battle. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
