Falcons Roll Down The Stretch, Top Concord On The Road

ATHENS, Ohio – Fairmont State used a 14-3 scoring run with just over nine minutes remaining in the second half to take control of Saturday's Mountain East Conference matchup with Concord at the Carter Center. The Falcons then held off Concord's late comeback bid to pick up an 86-80 win.

Leading by just two with under 10 minutes to play, Fairmont State (18-6, 14-4 MEC) went on a key 14-3 run that gave it the lead for good. D'Ondre Stockman hit a pair of threes during that stretch to help key the run, and scored all 14 of his points in the second half of play.

Concord led for 14:27, mostly in the opening half, as the game featured six ties and three lead changes. Concord's largest lead was six (18-12) at the 12:06 mark of the opening half.

Vonte Montgomery scored 21 points on 5-of-10 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line to lead the Falcons. Caleb Davis added 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Stockman added 14 (all in the second half). Jason Jolly and Kenzie Melko also added nine apiece for the Falcons, with seven of Melko's nine points coming in the second half of play.

The Falcons shot 50 percent from the field (30-of-60) and made nine three-pointers in the win.

Tommy Bolte poured in 39 points in the loss for Concord (12-12, 8-10 MEC), and was just shy of a triple-double with 10 rebounds and seven assists. Jafar Musa added 10 points – all of which came in the opening half. Concord shot 47.1 percent from the field, despite struggling from behind the arc (5-of-26). The Mountain Lions had a 40-35 rebounding advantage.

Fairmont State will now return home for a 7:30 p.m. Thursday matchup with the University of Charleston, inside Joe Retton Arena.
