Falcons Suffer Setback At UVa-Wise, 90-82

WISE, Va. – The streaking Fairmont State men's basketball team suffered a 90-82 setback at UVa-Wise on Thursday evening to drop its second-consecutive road game.

The Falcons, winners of 10 of their last 11, had won three-straight home games since falling to Wheeling Jesuit back on Jan. 24 on the road. Ironically, UVa-Wise now owns back-to-back wins over Wheeling Jesuit and Fairmont State, as the Cavs upset nationally-ranked Wheeling Jesuit, 81-78, last Saturday before topping the Falcons this evening.

FSU didn't go down without a fight on Thursday evening though, as FSU erased an eight-point UVa-Wise lead with just 4:36 remaining to cut the Cavalier lead to just one (80-79) less than two minutes later. Jason Jolly scored five-consecutive points on back-to-back possessions and Caleb Davis forced a steal and dropped in a layup to cap the stretch.

On the ensuing UVa-Wise possession, though, Taiwo Badmus nailed a three to slow down the FSU momentum, and the Cavs outscored Fairmont State 10-3 in the final three minutes to hold on for the win.

Badmus finished the evening with 38 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three blocks in the Cavalier victory. Yesid Mosquera-Perea (20), Michal Seals (17) and Chance Sheffey (10) also reached double-figures for UVa-Wise (10-13, 8-9 MEC).

The Cavs shot 47.8 percent from the field, held a 49-32 rebounding edge, and outscored Fairmont State 48-32 in the paint. UVa-Wise also dropped in 16 second-chance points.

Fairmont State (17-6, 13-4 MEC) also had four players reach double-figures, led by 16 points apiece from Davis and Jolly. D'Ondre Stockman also chipped in 15 points and R.J. Hutcherson added 13 for the Falcons.

The Falcons made 11 three-pointers on the evening, attempting 33 shots from behind the arc. Fairmont State shot 42 percent from the field (29-of-69).

FSU will face another tough road test on Saturday afternoon, as the Falcons travel to Concord for a 4 p.m. MEC matchup with the Mountain Lions.
