Fairmont State Completes Series Sweep At WJU

WHEELING, W.Va. -- Fairmont State completed the series sweep of Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday afternoon by defeating the Cardinals by scores of 7-3 and 6-5 at the I-470 Complex.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Falcons have improved to 15-14 overall and 9-7 in Mountain East Conference play. The Cardinals drop to 4-20 overall and 3-13 in league play.

Game 1

In game one, the Falcons scored three runs in the second inning and took the lead for good after trailing by a 2-1 deficit after the opening inning of play. Greg Yaksich singled up the middle in the top of the second inning to bring home Jacob Goodnight for the game tying run early in the inning. Austin Norman gave the Falcons the lead for good on a single into deep right field that brought home Ben Myers and Yaksich.

After the Cardinals added a third run in the bottom of the second, Goodnight added an RBI single in the third inning and Darrin Zombro drove in two on a single down the left field line in the top of the seventh to make the final score 7-3.

After surrendering three runs in the first two innings, Mark McKee (W, 2-0) and Houston Morris turned in quality relief work for the Falcons on the mound, allowing just three hits in the final five and two-thirds innings. McKee earned the victory and improved to 2-0 on the year.

Tyler Hill and Zombro each went 2-for-4 at the plate, and Norman and Zombro both drove in two runs apiece to pace the Falcons. Neither team recorded an extra base hit in the game.

Game 2

In game two, the Falcons rallied from an early 3-1 deficit following the first inning of play to pick up the series-sweeping victory.

Yaksich provided the game-winning run in game two by hitting an infield single to second base that allowed Goodnight to cross home plate for Fairmont's sixth run of the game. Yaksich also keyed a three-run third inning for the Falcons on another infield single that also brought home Goodnight.

Following Yaksich's RBI single in the third, Norman added an RBI single and Tyler Hill drove in a run on an RBI double later in the inning.

Goodnight went 3-for-3 with two runs scored in game two, and Myers and Yaksich each added a pair of hits for FSU. Hill and Goodnight each recorded doubles for the Falcons.

Luke Paull improved to 2-2 on the season after finishing the fifth and sixth innings on the hill for the Falcons. Drew Hetzel recorded his third save of the season by getting the final three outs of the game in the seventh.

Up next: The Falcons will now step out of conference play to take on Lake Erie College on Tuesday afternoon in Painesville, Ohio. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
