WHEELING, W.Va. – Fairmont State netted three goals and
Isabelle Vaccari recorded her fourth-consecutive shutout in net as the Falcons blanked Wheeling Jesuit 3-0 on Sunday evening Bishop Schmitt Field in Wheeling.
With the win, Fairmont State improves to 5-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the Mountain East Conference. WJU falls to 1-6 overall (0-3 MEC).
After a defensive battle for 27 minutes in the opening half of Sunday's game,
Abigail Fowler rebounded a save by Wheeling Jesuit goalkeeper Asya Carney and scored the first goal of the day in the 28
th minute.
Just nine minutes later,
Abigail Johnson used an assist from
Katie Doyle to net the second Fairmont State goal of the game in the 37
th minute. Doyle's pass set up a shot from inside the box and Johnson scored in the lower left corner of the net to put Fairmont State ahead by a 2-0 margin. Johnson's goal was her fifth of the season and third in the last two games as the junior netted a pair of goals against Glenville State on Wednesday night.
Fairmont State took complete control of the game just over two minutes into the second half when
Katie Doyle scored her third goal in the last two games with an assist from Fowler in the 48th minute. Like Johnson, Doyle also netted two goals in last Wednesday's win over Glenville State. Fowler, who scored a goal in the first half of the game, now has four goals and two assists in seven games for the Falcons this season. Fowler accounted for two goals and an assist in a pair of victories for the Falcons this week.
Fairmont State held a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal in a game that was otherwise evenly matched statistically. Vaccari recorded saves on each of the three shots on goal that she faced.
Fairmont State will return to action on Wednesday evening with a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup against Salem University.
