FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State women's soccer wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule on Wednesday evening by battling to a draw (1-1) against Salem University at Duvall-Rosier Field.
The draw is the second of the season for Fairmont State, as the Falcons move to 5-1-2 on the season. SU was apart of a draw for the first time this season and is now 4-2-1 on the year.
Kellie Norris gave the Falcons a 1-0 advantage in the 34
th minute when
Ella Wilson's free kick from the right side set up Norris's shot attempt. The goal was the first of the season for Norris, a second team All-MEC standout a season ago.
Fairmont State would hold on to the lead until the 88
th minute, when Salem's Tamara Queiroz scored her seventh goal of the season with an assists from Aliyah Armijo to knot the game at a goal apiece.
In the overtime periods, Salem held a 4-3 advantage in shot attempts – although none of the attempts required the goalkeepers to make a save.
For the game, Salem held a slim 7-6 advantage in shot on goal and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Vaccari, who made six saves on the evening, surrendered her first goal since September 5 against Urbana. The freshman goalkeeper had recorded four-straight shutouts in the Fairmont State net.
The Falcons will now return to conference play on Sunday, Sept. 30 against Urbana. The match is set for a 2 p.m. start at Duvall-Rosier Field.
