URBANA, Ohio -- Fairmont State scored two second half goals to pull away from Urbana and pick up a 3-1 victory, as the Falcons opened Mountain East Conference play on Wednesday evening at UU Stadium.

With the victory, Fairmont State improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Urbana falls to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Abigail Johnson put Fairmont State on the board early with a penalty kick goal in the 17
th minute of play, her second of the season. The goal was one of just four shots on goal in the opening half for both teams combined. Fairmont State goalkeeper
Isabelle Vaccari (2-1) faced just one shot on goal during the opening half.

In the second half,
Kylee Altland scored her team-leading third goal of the season in the 51
st minutes with an assist from
Abigail Fowler to give the Falcons a two-goal advantage with just under 40 minutes to play in regulation.

Urbana answered less than 10 minutes later when Jordan Littles put a shot past Vaccari and the Fairmont State defense in the 60
th minute.

The 2-1 Fairmont State advantage would remain the same until the final minute of regulation when Fowler was granted a penalty shot with just second remaining in regulation. Fowler netted the penalty attempt to make the final score 3-1 in favor of Fairmont State.

Fairmont State fired six shot attempts at UU goalkeeper Katherine Beech, with three of the attempts hitting the back of the net. In addition to a pair of Fairmont State penalty kicks, Johnson recorded three shots on goal and Altand added a fourth.

Vaccari (2-1) had another strong performance defensively for the Falcons, facing just four shots on goal and recording three saves. Urbana held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Fairmont State will now be idle for the next week, before returning to action next Wednesday with a matchup against Notre Dame College at Duvall-Rosier Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
