BROOKFIELD, Ill. -- Fairmont State's
Lyrics Klugh and
Chandler Zavala earned All-America honors from the Don Hansen Football Committee on Tuesday morning.
Â
Klugh, a standout kick return for the Falcons, earned first team honors as a return specialist, and Zavala, and offensive guard, was an honorable mention selection.
Â
Jason Woodman's football program has now had eight players earn All-America honors in the last three years, includingÂ
Jacob Jean-Charles andÂ
Quincy Redmon in 2016,Â
Marcus Porter,Â
Michael Porter andÂ
Stephen Turner in 2017, and Klugh, Zavala and linebacker
Jerry Iweh in 2018. Klugh has earned All-America honors from AFCA, D2CCA, Don Hansen Gazette and D2football.com since the end of the 2018 season.
Â
Klugh led NCAA Division II in punt return average (28.5) and punt return touchdowns (3) during the 2018 season. In fact, Klugh's average of 28.5 yards per punt return was 10.4 yards more then West Georgia's Malik Henry – who ranked second in the country at 18.1 yards per punt return during the regular season.
Â
Klugh, a first team All-MEC and All-Region selection as a return specialist, returned 19 punts for 542 yards and three touchdowns and added 21 kick returns for 534 yards on the season. Klugh averaged 25.4 yards per kick return on the year, which ranked 36th in the country. Klugh's 542 punt return yards this season are the second-most in a single season at Fairmont State behind Bill Ewusiak's school record 718 punt return yards in 1967.
Â
Zavala, a first team All-MEC and Don Hansen All-Region selection at guard, helped the Fairmont State offensive line pave the way for the 25th best rushing attack in the country (222.9) during the 2018 season. Fairmont State also had its first 1,000-yard rusher since the 2007 season, and three different Fairmont State running backs totaled more than 350 yard and five TDs on the ground this season. The Fairmont State offense also averaged 39.4 points per game, which ranked 15th in the country, and the Fairmont State offense line allowed just eight sacks on the season.
The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen's Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.
