INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State topped Fairmont State, 3-1, in Mountain East Conference action on Friday evening to improve to 6-0 in league play (29-27, 25-21, 13-25, 25-18).
Fairmont State (8-11, 1-5 MEC) held a 59-45 advantage in total kills and had a 7-3 advantage in service aces in the victory. The Falcons recorded a .252 hitting percentage, compared to .173 for the Yellow Jackets.
WV State (12-9 overall) held a 9-5 advantage in total blocks during the victory.
Freshman outside hitter
Keara Lewis paced the Falcons in the setback by recording 19 kills and 12 digs. The Falcons also got 10 kills, six digs and two blocks from
Rebecca Feeney, and nine kills from
Emma Mobley.
Julia DiPaola finished the match with eight kills and a team-high 19 digs, while freshman libero
Bryce Knapp wrapped up the evening with 17 digs.
Lilly Keber paced the Fairmont State offense by passing out 26 assists, while
Kelsey Moeller added 19 assists. Keber and Moeller each recorded double-doubles with 16 and 11 digs, respectively.
Jenna Dufresne led West Virginia State in the victory with 16 kills and 10 digs. J'Lana Stone and Gabrielle Bullock each notched five blocks apiece.
Fairmont State will return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. matchup against the University of Charleston.
