SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- The Fairmont State men's and women's swim teams turned in 18 top-3 finishes during its season opener on Friday evening at Shippensburg University.

The women's swim team competed in a tri-meet with Shippensburg and California (PA), while the men's team had a dual meet with the host Raiders.

On the women's side, Fairmont State turned in a trio of first place finished on the evening, including
Zsofi Bevardi with wins in the 500 and 1000 freestyle events.
Courtney Deem, the reigning MEC Swimmer of the Year, also turned in a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.68, and added a runner-up finish in the 100 free with a time of 56.36.

Emily Gersper added a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.85) for Fairmont State, while
Monique Dias finished third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:21.10.

The Fairmont State women also turned in a pair of top-three finishes in the relay events, as Deem, Gersper, Dias and Bevardi finished second in the 200 medley relay, while
Eulalia Castan,
Sarah Stallman,
Becka Crandall and Gersper teamed up to earn a third-place finish in the 200 free relay to wrap up the meet.

On the men's side, Fairmont State was anchored by a first-place finish in the 200 free relay as
Devan Wilson,
Josep Castan,
Nathan Fubio and
John Carter turned in a time of 1:33.56. Individually,
Ricard Castan took first place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:16.54.

The winning 200 freestyle team edged out their teammates in the relay race as
Tyler Ridgle,
Trevor Gallardo,
Chase Curry and
Kyle Carson turned in a time of 1:42.54 to earn second place in the event.

Castan also led a trio of Fairmont State swimmers at the top of the leaderboard in the 500 free, as Carson came in second in the event with a time of 5:44.42, and Curry finished third with a time of 5:53.24.

Pedro Gaspar turned in two impressive performances in the 100 and 200 freestyle events for Fairmont State during the meet, finishing runner-up in each event with times of 47.97 and 1:46.98, respectively.

Josep Castan added a third-place finish for Fairmont State in the 100 butterfly, while
Ricard Castan finished third in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:57.33.

In addition to Fairmont State's impressive swims in the 200 free relay, the team of
Ricard Castan,
Tyler Virtue,
Josep Castan and Gaspar finished second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.40.

Fairmont State will return to action on Friday, Nov. 1 at the West Virginia State Games in Morgantown.
