FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Abigail Fowler scored a goal late in the second overtime period to give Fairmont State a 1-0 Mountain East Conference victory on Sunday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field. The win helped Fairmont State set a new single-season record for wins as the Falcons improved to 9-4-2 overall and 8-2-2 in MEC play.
Â
Prior to this season, Fairmont State's best record in program history was its 8-6-4 mark in 2018.
Â
Urbana dropped to 5-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the league as the Falcons shutout the Blue
Knights for the second time this season. Fairmont State topped Urbana 2-0 back on Sept. 25 on the road.
Â
In addition, Fairmont State freshman goalkeeper
Taylor Kennedy also set a new single-season record for shutouts after recording her eighth clean sheet of the season during Sunday's victory over the Blue Knights. Kennedy faced six total shots on the evening and recorded one save.
Â
Kennedy topped Isabelle Vaccari's single-season record of seven shutouts during the 2018 campaign.
Â
Fowler's goal was her fourth of the season, including the second game-winning goal of the year for the sophomore. Fowler also netted a game-winning goal during the Falcons' 1-0 win over Frostburg State earlier this month.
Abigail Johnson assisted on Fowler's game-winning goal by fielding a deflected ball and passing it to Fowler for the game-winning shot attempt.
Â
The assist was Johnson's third of the week and fourth of the season for the senior. Johnson assisted on two of
Mackenzie Gillispie's goals during Wednesday evening's win over Wheeling University.
Â
Statistically, Fairmont State held an 18-6 advantage in total shots, including an 8-1 edge in shots on goal. The Falcons also had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Fairmont State will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at Notre Dame College. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. in South Euclid. Fairmont State and Notre Dame battled to a 1-1 draw back on Sept. 22 at Duvall-Rosier Field.
