Falcons Take Set Three, Drop Match Against No. 20 Wheeling

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State dropped a four-set match to 20th-ranked Wheeling University on Friday evening during the Falcons' 2019 home opener on Dan Cava Court inside Joe Retton Arena.
 
Following the setback, Fairmont State goes to 6-9 overall and 0-3 in the Mountain East Conference. Wheeling moves to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the league.
 
The Falcons put together a strong performance during the first three sets, hitting .205 in set one, and .255 in set three. The Falcons also held an 11-8 advantage in total blocks.
 
Rebecca Feeney paced the Falcons in the match with 17 kills and seven total blocks, hitting .400 on the evening with just three errors. Julia DiPaola and Keara Lewis each chipped in double-double performances for the Falcons with 10 kill and 18 digs each. Amelia Moore also chipped in eight kills for the Falcons.
 
Lily Keber also recorded a double-doubles for the Falcons with 26 assists and 10 digs, while Kelsey Moeller added 18 assists. Bryce Knapp paced Fairmont State defensively with 13 digs to go with five assists.
 
Wheeling had three players with double-digit kills in the victory, including 16 kills from Breanna Kramer and 15 kills from Abby Strait. Wheeling's Stephanie Sylvester passed out 56 assists, and Audrey Francis tallied 24 digs in the victory.
 
Wheeling hit .268 on the evening, including a .314 hitting percentage in set two, and a .432 hitting percentage in the fourth set to put the Falcons away.
 
Fairmont State will return to Joe Retton Arena on Saturday afternoon for a 12 noon matchup against West Liberty.
