Wesleyan Tops Fairmont State With Goal In 55th Minute

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- West Virginia Wesleyan's Haelly Ramirez netted the only goal of the evening to lift the Bobcats to a 1-0 win over Fairmont State in Mountain East Conference action at Duvall-Rosier Field on Sunday evening.

Ramirez's goal came in the 55th minute on a put back after a free kick by Ellie Hill that couldn't be handled near the goal by Fairmont State goalkeeper Taylor Kennedy. Ramirez beat Kennedy in the bottom left corner of the goal on a put back shot. The goal is Ramirez's fifth of the season.

Ellie Hill earned the assist on the goal after setting up the scoring chance with her free kick just seconds earlier.

Fairmont State suffered its first conference loss of the season and is now 5-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in MEC play. The Bobcats improve to .500 on the season at 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the league.

Fairmont State netted what was thought to be the game-tying goal in the 73rd minute, but the score was waved off due to a handball, leaving the Bobcats in front by a 1-0 margin.

There was very little offense in the game, as the Bobcats held a 5-4 advantage in total shots. However, each of Fairmont State's shot attempts were on target and required a save from Bobcat goalkeeper Chelsea Hubner.

Cassie Whitlatch, Abigail Johnson, Abigail Fowler, and Riley Ward each produced scoring chances for the Falcons in the setback.

Fairmont State also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks on the evening. There were also 32 total fouls and four cards issued during the game, including 20 of the 32 fouls being whistled on the Bobcats.

The Falcons will remain at home to face the 5-2-1 Senators of Davis & Elkins on Wednesday evening at Duvall-Rosier Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
