Lady Falcons Edged At Gannon, 93-89

ERIE, Pa. -- Gannon capitalized in the final minute of play to edge Fairmont State, 93-89, in Atlantic Region women's basketball action at the Hammermill Center in Erie on Wednesday evening.
 
The Lady Knights made three defensive stops and scored seven-consecutive points in final minute of the fourth quarter to pick up the victory over the Falcons.
 
Gannon improves to 2-1 on the year with the victory. Fairmont State fell to 1-2 following the setback.
 
Fairmont State's Rachel Laskody tied the game at 86-86 with 52 seconds remining on a putback following her own missed shot. However, Gannon regained the lead with 28 seconds remaining following a three-point play Tori Obenrader in the paint to make the score 89-86.
 
Following a Fairmont State timeout, Obenrader quickly forced a Fairmont State turnover and went 1-of-2 from the free throw line to make the Gannon advantage four, 90-86, with just 19 seconds remaining.
 
On the next possession, Fairmont State attempted to cut the Gannon advantage in half, but Sierra Kotchman's layup attempt rimmed out and Gannon grabbed the rebound and returned to the free throw line with 14 seconds remaining in regulation.
 
The Lady Knights would once again go 1-of-2 from the line and got a defensive stop for the third-consecutive possession as the clock ran under 10 seconds remaining in regulation.
 
After two more free throws by Gannon to make the Gannon lead seven (93-86), Fairmont State's Gracey Lamm buried a three as time expired to make the final score 93-89 in favor of the home-standing Knights.
 
The Falcons shot over 52 percent from the field and over 53 percent from three-point range (14-of-26) in the setback. However, Fairmont State did get outrounded 43-23 and gave up 21 second-chance points in the setback. Gannon shot just under 50 percent from the field (49.3%).
 
Fairmont State held a game-high 14-point lead (37-23) with 6:43 remaining in the second quarter before Gannon closed the Falcons' advantage to just two points at the break, 44-42.
 
Fairmont State had three 20-point scorers and four double-figure scorers in the loss, led by Kotchman with 22 points, four rebounds and three assists. The Falcons also got 20 points apiece form Kamrin Weimer and Brooke Kurucz, and 12 points and a team-high five rebounds from Laskody.
 
Weimer's 20-point scoring performance set a new career-high as the junior went 6-of-8 from behind the arc.
 
Obenrader dominated the paint for the Lady Knights, scoring 36 points and pulling down 12 rebounds in the win. Gannon also got 12 points apiece from Chelsea Rourke and Boston McKinney.
 
Fairmont State will return to action on Saturday evening at California University of Pennsylvania. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
