FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State secured a spot in the MEC Tournament final with a 2-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday night at Duvall-Rosier Field. The win is the programs first over the Bobcats in the six-year history of the program.
The win sends the Falcons to their first MEC Tournament final with a record of 13-4-2. The Falcons will meet south division champion Concord in the finals on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Beckley, with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament.
West Virginia Wesleyan finishes the season at 13-7-0.
Fairmont State scored an early goal after
Cameryn Ciresi finished off a rebound after a Falcon corner kick by
Ella Wilson. Ciresi scored her third-consecutive game-winning goal, and now have five total goals on the season.
Lacy Bryant and Wilson each earned assists on Ciresi's goal.
The teams traded three shots on goal the rest of the way, but neither team notched a goal, allowing Fairmont State to take a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The Bobcats got two shots off in the first 13 minutes of the second half that required saves from Fairmont State keeper
Taylor Kennedy. Two minutes later, though, the Falcons got an insurance goal in the 61st minute as
Abigail Johnson collected the ball at the top of the box and slipped a low shot past the keeper for the score. The goal was Johnson's third of the season.
The Falcons were able to hold off the Bobcats the rest of the way and preserve the shutout victory.
Kennedy finished with eight saves for Fairmont State in the win, as the freshman recorded her 12
th shutout of the season. Chelsea Hubner made six saves for WVWC in the losing effort.
Prior to Friday's game, four Fairmont State standouts were honors for receiving first team All-MEC honors, and the received their MEC North Division trophy after winning the regular season crown.
