BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Isaiah Sanders buried the game-winning 3-pointer with 0.3 seconds remaining to lift Fairmont State to a 75-72 come-from-behind victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday evening at the Rockefeller Center in Buckhannon.
The Falcons led just 1:32 seconds on the evening in a game that featured nine lead changes and five ties, with most of the lead changes coming early in the game. The Bobcats led for over 35 minutes.
With the victory, Fairmont State improves to 3-1 on the year, including 1-1 in the Mountain East Conference. WVWC falls to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Fairmont State used a 10-0 run from the 4:37 mark to the 40 second mark of the second half to grab a three-point advantage (72-69) late in the game following a made 3-pointer by
Dale Bonner. However, Braeden McGrew quickly answered on the opposite end with a Wesleyan three with just under 30 seconds remaining in the contest to knot the score at 72-72.
Fairmont State held the ball to guarantee the last shot of the second half, when Bonner found Sanders on the left side of the arc to set up the game-winner with well under a second remaining in regulation.
The Falcons were just 5-of-30 from behind the arc before Bonner and Sanders buried triples in the final 40 seconds of the game.
Despite the strong finish, Fairmont State wrapped up the evening by shooting just 38 percent from the field and just under 22 percent from behind the arc. Wesleyan finished the game by shooting 43 percent from the floor, cooling off significantly after shooting over 58 percent from the field in the opening half.
The Falcons faced a game-high 13-point deficit in the first half, and trailed by as many as 10 at the 7:07 mark of the second half.
The Falcons did force 17 Wesleyan turnovers and scored 22 points in transition in the victory. Fairmont State also outscored Wesleyan in the paint by a 38-26 margin.
Bonner scored a career-high 25 points and recorded his first-career double-double by adding 11 rebounds in the road victory on Tuesday evening. The redshirt freshman also added five assists and four steals and knocked down 9-of-17 shots in the win, including 3-of-4 shots from long range. The Falcons also got 16 points apiece from Sanders and
Kenzie Melko-Marshall.
Cole VonHandorf, who led the Falcons in scoring coming into the contest, finished the evening with just two points after struggling from the field by making just 1-of-12 shot attempts.
Wesleyan had three players reach double-figures on Tuesday evening, including 18 points from Luka Petrovic and 14 points and 11 rebounds from Ross Young. The Bobcats also got 13 points from Marcus Larsson off the bench.
West Virginia Wesleyan held a 40-36 advantage on the glass.
The Falcons will take a couple days off for Thanksgiving, before returning to action on Saturday evening at Bowie State. Tip is set for 4 p.m.
