Melko Nets 30, Falcons Dominate Concord on the Road

ATHENS, W.Va. -- Fairmont State shot over 50 percent from the field and put on a dominating performance on Tuesday night at the Carter Center, rolling to a 91-67 road win over the Mountain Lions.
 
Junior forward Kenzie Melko-Marshall matched his career-high with 30 points in the victory, shooting 10-of-16 from the field (.625) and 5-of-10 from three-point range. Melko also added seven rebounds and four assists for the Falcons.
 
With the win, the Falcons remain atop the MEC standings with a 7-1 overall record, and a 4-1 mark in conference play. CU falls to 4-6 overall and just 2-3 in league play.
 
The Falcons broke open a close game after the first media timeout and built a lead as large as 24 in the opening half. The Falcons shot 58 percent from the field and made 7-of-15 three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes of action. Melko ended the first half with a deep three as the Falcons went to the locker room with 53-29 advantage.
 
The Falcons didn't miss a beat after halftime and opened the second half on a 16-6 scoring run to push their advantage to 69-35 with 16:02 remaining.
 
For the game, the Falcons shot 51 percent from the field with 10 three-pointers in the victory. Fairmont State also scored 21 points off turnovers, including 20 points on the fast break during the win.
 
Defensively, the Falcons were just as impressive by limiting Concord to just 43 percent from the field with just a 5-of-27 performance from behind the arc. Concord also turned the ball over 16 times.
 
In addition to Melko's career-high performance, Cole VonHandorf also chipped in 24 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Despite battling foul trouble, Dale Bonner stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, six rebounds and seven assists, and Seth Younkin also chipped in nine points and five rebounds.
 
Concord got a team-high 15 points from Malik Johnson in the setback. Ethan Heller, Concord's leading scorer coming into the game at 16 points per game, shot 0-of-8 from the field and was held scoreless on Tuesday night.
 
Fairmont State will now be idle until Sunday afternoon when Glenville State visits Dan Cava Court at Joe Retton Arena for a 4 p.m. tip.
