INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Rachel Laskody scored a career-high 33 points and
Sierra Kotchman went over 1,000 career points as Fairmont State ran past West Virginia State, 87-56, on Sunday afternoon in Institute.

The Falcons got Laskody the ball early and often during the victory, as the junior went 15-of-18 from the field and scored 33 points to go with 12 rebounds and a blocked shot. Laskody's previous career mark was 27, which she had scored twice earlier this season.

Laskody scored 13 points in the opening quarter, and had 17 at the half.

In addition to Laskody's big day, Kotchman also chipped in 23 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. As a result, the sophomore became the first player in Fairmont State women's basketball history to score over 1,000 career points in her first two seasons with the program. Kotchman now has 1,018 points in just 56 career games in the maroon and white.

Kotchman is the 31
st player in school history to join the 1,000-point club.

Fairmont State (11-15, 8-12 MEC) shot 50 percent from the field, including 73 percent in the first quarter and 61 percent in the first half of play. Â The Falcons also held a commanding 51-42 rebounding advantage and had 23 assists on 36 made baskets.

On the defensive end, the Falcons limited the Yellow Jackets to just 25 percent from the field, including just an 8-of-40 performance from behind the arc (20%).

The Falcons scored 24 of the first 27 points in the game and led 24-3 with 3:56 remaining in the first quarter. After the quick start, the Yellow Jackets were able to pull to within 10 at 45-35 just 15 seconds into the third quarter. However, Fairmont State quickly answered and pushed its third quarter lead to 25 following a three by Kotchman with 37 seconds remaining in the third.

Fairmont State extended its lead to as many as 37 with just over three minutes to play in the fourth quarter before settling for the 87-56 win.

Brooke Kurucz was the third Falcon to reach double-figures with 12 points, five rebounds and a career-high eight assists. Eight Falcons scored in the game.

Lyrin Hatcher led the Yellow Jackets with 13 points and 15 rebounds in the setback. Charity Shears also reached double-figures with 11.

Fairmont State will close out the regular season with two games at Joe Retton Arena this week, starting with a 5:30 p.m. tip against West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday evening.
