FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- An 8-1 run to open the fourth quarter helped spark Fairmont State to a 78-69 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night at Joe Retton Arena.
With the win, Fairmont State improves to 12-15 overall and 9-12 in the Mountain East Conference. The Falcons will be either the No. 7 or No. 8 seed in next week's MEC Tournament, depending on the result of Saturday's matchup against Shepherd University. The winner of Saturday's game will be the No. 7 seed in the tournament.
West Virginia Wesleyan falls to 6-18 overall and 6-15 in the league with the loss.
The Falcons led by just three points at 55-52 after three quarters, and the 8-1 stretch made it a 10-point advantage for Fairmont State.
Kamrin Weimer and
Sierra Kotchman had bookend three-pointers to a
Rachel Laskody layup during the stretch. A pair of three-pointers helped WVWC get back to within six, but back-to-back buckets from Weimer and Kotchman helped keep the Falcons firmly in the lead down the stretch.
Fairmont State shot nearly 56 percent from the field and connected on 9-of-18 shots from behind the arc in the win.
Kotchman finished with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists to lead Fairmont State. Laskody also netted 16 points and five rebounds, and
Kamrin Weimer finished with 14 points.
Ozge Yarga rounded out Fairmont's double-figure scorers with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.
Brittany Stawovy connected on four three-pointers to finish with 12 points. Abi Gabauer also contributed 12 points for the Bobcats, and Nicole Gilyard chipped in 10 points and six boards.
Fairmont State will wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon against Shepherd. Tip is set for 2 p.m. at Joe Retton Arena.
