Falcons Win Third In A Row on Senior Day

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State opened up a 35-22 halftime lead and never looked back in a 73-66 victory over Shepherd on Saturday afternoon on senior day at Joe Retton Arena.
 
Following the game, Fairmont State honored Molly Rinkevich and Ozge Yarga during the senior day presentation for the men's and women's basketball programs.
 
The win helped Fairmont State improve to 13-15 overall and 10-12 in Mountain East Conference play. The Falcons have secured the No. 7 seed in next week's MEC Tournament and will face West Virginia Wesleyan in first round action on Wednesday, March 6 at 12 noon.
 
Shepherd falls to 11-17 overall and 8-14 in the league. Shepherd clinched the No. 8 seed in the MEC Tournament.
 
With Fairmont State clinging to a 14-13 lead at the 2:19 mark of the first quarter follow a pair of Shepherd free throws, the Falcons ended the quarter on a 7-0 run and outscored Shepherd 15-4 over a 10 minutes stretch from late in the first quarter to late in the second quarter to take control of the game.
 
Shepherd was able to chip away at Fairmont State's lead and cut the margin to just five with just 29 seconds remaining in the fourth, but Ozge Yarga sank two free throws and the Falcons got a stop on the defensive end to close out the win in the final minute.
 
Fairmont State shot nearly 46 percent from the field despite making just five 3-pointers in the game. The Falcons shot 5-of-8 from behind the arc in the first half, compared to a dismal 0-of-6 performance in the second half.
 
Rachel Laskody scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the win. The Falcons also got 19 points and six rebounds from Brooke Kurucz and 13 points from Sierra Kotchman. Yarga finished her final game at Joe Retton Arena with eight points, eight assists and four rebounds, and Rinkevich grabbed eight rebounds on senior day.
 
Kayla Tibbs led Shepherd with 20 points in the setback, while Marley McLaughlin chipped in 13.
