Falcons Take Two Against Bobcats, Improve To 3-1 In MEC Play

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State improved to 12-6 on the season following a doubleheader sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.
 
Kevin Ayala hit a walk-off inside the park home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Falcons a 5-4 win in game one. Fairmont State then took game two by a 5-3 final to earn the sweep.
 
Game 1: Fairmont State 5, WV Wesleyan 4 (F/11 innings)
 
In game one, the Falcons opened a 3-0 lead by scoring a trio of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Chris Green drove in the first run on a sacrifice bunt, before E.J. Trickett added an RBI single to center field, and Ayala doubled to left center to drive in a run.
 
After a scoreless third inning, Wesleyan's Eric Forbrick homered to right center in the top of the fourth to cut Fairmont State's lead to 3-2. Later in the inning, Tanner McCallister hit an RBI single to tie the game, before Greg Smith singled to right field to give the Bobcats the lead.
 
Ayala re-tied the game in the bottom of the fourth to with an RBI single to center field that scored Green.
 
The score remained the same until the bottom of the 11th when Ayala hit a ball to the right field fence that turned into an inside the park home run – giving the Falcons a 5-4 win.
 
Three players had multiple hits in the game for the Falcons, including a 4-of-6 performance from Ayala, a 3-of-5 performance from Greg Yaksich, and a 2-of-4 performance from Zach Musgrove. Ayala drove in three of Fairmont's five runs in the win.
 
Logan Smith made the start for the Falcons and went three and two-thirds innings before Sam Aloi came in as relief. Aloi (2-0) pitched seven and one-third innings, and allow no runs and two hits to pick up the win.
 
Game 2: Fairmont State 5, WV Wesleyan 3
 
Following an 11-inning battle in game one to decide the game, the Falcons scored the first five runs in game two to take control of the game.
 
Each of the five runs came in the third inning, starting with Trickett stealing home following an error by the Bobcats to make the score 1-0. Joe LaRocca and Tyler Skidmore added RBI singles during two of the next four at-bats to make the score 3-0.

Musgrove scored the fourth run of the inning on a passed ball, before Nick Mann hit a sacrifice fly into right field to make the score 5-0.
 
Wesleyan scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Mark McKee pitched the sixth inning, and Houston Morris pitched the seventh to record his second save of the season as the Falcons held off the Bobcats.
 
J.T. Stegmaier picked up the win after allowing just two earned runs and two hits during his four and two-thirds innings of work. Stegmaier improved to 3-1 on the season.
 
LaRocca went 2-of-3 to lead Fairmont at the plate, as six different Falcons recorded hits in the win. Mann and Trickett each recorded doubles for the Falcons.
 
Fairmont State will return to action next Saturday at West Virginia State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Institute.
