BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State softball team swept West Virginia Wesleyan 9-2 and 2-1 in a pair of Mountain East Conference games on Sunday afternoon at Culpepper Field in Buckhannon. The doubleheader sweep of the Bobcats is the first in program history for the Falcons.

With the wins, the Falcons improved to 8-8 overall and 3-1 in MEC play. The Bobcats fell to 6-10 overall and 1-3 in the league following the sweep.

According to the game-by-game results in the Fairmont State record, the Falcons are 11-31 against the Bobcats since the 2004 season. The two wins over Wesleyan yesterday afternoon also mark just the fourth time since 2004 that the Falcons have beaten the Bobcats multiple times in a season.

Game 1: Fairmont State 9, WV Wesleyan 2

In the first game of the day, Fairmont State rolled to a 9-2 victory over the home standing Bobcats as senior ace
Hannah Absalom (7-1) recorded her fourth win of the week and seventh win of the season. Absalom allowed just one earned run on 11 hits and struck out six to pick up the win.

At the plate, the Falcons scored nine unanswered runs after falling behind 2-0.
Kadi Cosgrove got the scoring started for the Falcons by hitting a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to tie the game.
Carly Clarke gave the Falcons the lead for good by driving in
Olivia Dunn on her groundout in the fifth inning.

The Falcons pushed their 3-2 lead to 6-2 in the top of the sixth following RBI singles by
Heidi Hormell and Courtney Baughman, and an RBI double by Clarke.

Hormell made the final score 9-2 after blasting a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to cap the scoring.

Jenny Stubbs led the Falcons with a 3-for-4 performance, while Clarke, Hormell and Cosgrove each recorded two hits in the win. The Falcons had four extra-base hits in the win, compared to just one for the Bobcats.

Game 2: Fairmont State 2, WV Wesleyan 1

Wesleyan was also the first team to score in game two, as Kiley Turner belted a solo home run in the bottom of the second to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the top of the third when Stubbs drove a single into left field to drive home Dunn and tie the game at 1-1. Stubbs also added the game-winning run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run – her second home run of the season.

Haley McDaniel (1-2) picked up her first win of the season in game two, allowing just one run on four hits in the win. McDaniel allowed just one extra-base hit in the win (the solo home run in the second inning).

Fairmont State will return to action next Saturday at Notre Dame College. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in South Euclid.
