Weaver's Walk-off Lifts Fairmont State In Extra Innings; Falcons, Rams Split

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Jessie Weaver hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning on Wednesday afternoon to give Fairmont State a 3-2 win in game two of it Mountain East Conference twinbill with Shepherd University at Duvall-Rosier Field.

Shepherd blanked Fairmont State 2-0 in game one of the doubleheader as the team's split the first two matchups of the season in MEC North play.

As a result of the split, Fairmont State moves to 16-12 overall and 10-4 in league play. Shepherd moves to 22-6 overall and 12-2 in the league.

With Shepherd leading 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning of game two, Becca Sullivan put the Falcons on the board for the first time on the afternoon by driving in Weaver on a groundout down the first base line. Two batters later, Darby Petersen drove a single though the right side of the infield to bring home Courtney Worcester and tie the game at two runs apiece – eventually forcing extra innings.

For the next three innings, Shepherd starter Lori Sturgill and Petersen went back and forth in a pitching dual that entered the 11th inning.

In the top of the 11th, Shepherd had two runners on with just one out, but Petersen recorded a strikeout and squeezed a pop fly to record the final two outs of the inning.

In the bottom of the 11th with Andie Baughman placed at second base, Olivia Dunn led off the winning with a sacrifice but to put the game-winning run on third base. Weaver finished the job by hitting a single to left center to lift the Falcons to a come-from-behind 3-2 win.

The Falcon softball program had not had a game go into the 11th inning since April 5, 2009, a 6-4 win over West Virginia State in a game that went 12 innings.

Despite the win, Fairmont State managed just seven singles in game two, compared to six extra-base hits for Shepherd.

Petersen improved to 2-4 on the season with the win, going the final six innings and allowing just three hits and striking out four. Kadi Cosgrove started the game and gave the Falcons five quality innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits.

Sturgill pitched 10 and a third before surrendering the game-winning run, she moves to 7-3 on the year.

She outlasted Fairmont State's Hannah Absalom, who allowed just six hits and two unearned runs, suffering just her third loss of the season on the mound. Absalom is now 11-3 on the year.

Sturgill drove in the only runs of the game in game one of the day, hitting a two-RBI double to right center in the top of the fourth.
