Fairmont State Blanks Wheeling To Open MEC Play

WHEELING, W.Va. -- Fairmont State freshman standout Ari Christiansen scored two goals in the first six minutes of play and the Falcons never looked back in a 6-0 Mountain East Conference victory over Wheeling University on Wednesday evening at Bishop Schmidt Field.
 
With the victory, Fairmont State improves to 2-2 on the year, including a 1-0 mark in league play. Wheeling Jesuit falls to 0-4 (0-1 MEC).
 
Statistically, the Falcons held a 39-5 advantage in total shots, including an 18-3 advantage in shots on goals. Fairmont State also had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
 
Christiansen put the Falcons on the board at the 2:06 mark on a cross from Lacy Bryant to make the score 1-0. Just under four minutes later, Christiansen scored her second goal of the game and fourth goal of the season with an assist from Mackenzie Gillispie – putting the Falcons ahead by a 2-0 margin.
 
Late in the first half, senior Katie Doyle made the score 3-0 on the receiving end of a cross from Louise Welch. The goal was the first of the season for Doyle.

Fairmont State's Ella Wilson added to the Falcons lead on a successful free kick from inside the offensive zone to push the lead to 4-0 at the 56:13 mark.
 
Olivia Liston, a first-year Falcon that transferred to Fairmont State from Wheeling, scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to add to Fairmont's commanding lead. Shannon Westfall made the final score 6-0 with just under three minutes remaining on an unassisted goal – her first of the season.
 
Taylor Kennedy (2-2) recorded three saves and earned her first solo clean sheet of the season in the Fairmont State goal. Megan Herter recorded 10 saves in the setback for WU.
 
Christiansen tallied four shots on goal for the Falcons, while senior Abigail Johnson had three shots on goal during the victory.
 
Fairmont State will return home on Sunday to host Notre Dame College in a 4 p.m. MEC matchup.
