Falcons Top Mercyhurst, Split Day 1 at Atlantic Region Crossover

WHEELING, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State volleyball team opened the Atlantic Region Crossover event at Wheeling University with a five-set victory over Mercyhurst University on Friday afternoon. The Falcons split the opening day of play after falling to Clarion, 3-1, on Friday evening.
 
In the victory over Mercyhurst, the Falcons got a team-high 14 kills and seven total blocks from redshirt junior Rebecca Feeney. Amelia Moore and Julia DiPaola also chipped in double-digit kills for the Falcons with 12 and 11, respectively. Keara Lewis and Emma Mobley chipped in eight kills apiece for the Fairmont State offense against the Lakers.
 
In addition to a .225 attacking percentage in the victory, the Falcons also held an 11-7 advantage in total blocks. Following Feeney's team-high seven blocks in the match, the Falcons also got five total blocks from Lewis and four blocks from Samantha Robb.
 
Sydney McCoy tallied a team-high 17 digs for the Falcons, while DiPaola added 16 to record a double-double in the victory. Kelsey Moeller led the Falcons in assists with 26, while Lily Keber chipped in 23 assists to go with 10 digs.
 
The Falcons were aided by 35 Mercyhurst errors during the victory.

In the second match of the day against Clarion, the Falcons got 12 kills from Mobley and 11 from Lewis to lead the offensive attack. Feeney also chipped in eight kills from her middle hitter position.
 
McCoy (23), Moeller (20), DiPaola (19) and Lewis (13) all chipped in double-digit digs for the Falcons. Keber guided the Fairmont State offense with 22 assists, while Moeller added 12.
 
Fairmont State had a .110 attacking percentage against the Golden Eagles, and Clarion also held a 9-6 advantage in total blocks. Fairmont State had an 8-6 advantage in service aces.
 
Clarion drove home 64 kills in the victory, compared to just 43 for the Falcons.
 
The Falcons will wrap up play at the Atlantic Region Crossover on Saturday afternoon against Shippensburg (2 p.m.) and Slippery Rock (4 p.m.).
