Fairmont State Soccer Edged 1-0 In Season Opener

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Caldwell University's Jordan Madrid scored an unassisted goal in the 60th minute of Friday's non-conference matchup with Fairmont State to give the Cougars a 1-0 win in the season opening-game for both teams.

Madrid's goal was unassisted and was generated by a free kick in the Caldwell offensive zone. The goal was just one of five shots the Cougars fired on Friday night.

Despite the setback, Fairmont State outshot Caldwell 15-5 in the game, including a 7-3 advantage in shots that were on target. Caldwell's goalkeeper Jamie-Lee Bamford had an impressive performance to open the season, holding Fairmont State to a clean sheet by making seven saves on the evening.

True-freshman Taylor Kennedy made her first career start in the Fairmont State goal on Friday, recording a pair of saves and facing five total shots on the evening.

Fairmont State also had seven corner kicks, compared to just four for Caldwell.

Eight different players attempted a shot for the Falcons in the game, with Katie Doyle and Louise Welch leading the Falcons with three attempts each. Ella Wilson, Mackenzie Gillisipie and Abigail Fowler each took two shot attempts each.

Fairmont State will return to action on Wednesday at Salem University. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
