ASHLAND, Ohio -- Fairmont State volleyball split a pair of matches on day one of the Ashland Volleyball Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Falcons dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision against Cal (PA) in their first match of the day, before sweeping Bloomsburg 3-0 later in the afternoon.

In the first match of the day, Fairmont State opened up a 2-1 advantage over the Vulcans before Cal rallied to take the final two sets and the win. The Falcons led by three points midway through the fourth set before the Vulcans rallied to force the fifth and deciding set.

Julia DiPaola paced the Falcons against Cal, finishing the match with 20 kills and 16 digs from her outside hitter position.
Rebecca Feeney also reach double-figures with 12 kills to go along with a pair of block solos. Feeney committed just two errors in the match, finishing the five-setter with a .588 hitting percentage. Freshmen
Amelia Moore and
Keara Lewis each chipped in nine kills apiece for the Falcons in the setback.

Sydney McCoy recorded a team-high 21 digs in the match, while
Kelsey Moeller (27) and Lily Keber (20) combined for 57 assists to lead the Fairmont State offensive attack.

In the second match of the day against Bloomsburg, Fairmont State got eight kills and five blocks from Feeney, eight kills and 10 digs from DiPaola, and eight kills and a block from Moore.

Feeney and Moore both recorded hitting percentages of .500 or better in the win over Bloomsburg.

The Falcons once again got a team-high 18 digs from McCoy. Keber notched 17 assists in the three-set victory, while Moeller added 16 more.

Fairmont State will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Ashland University. The Falcons will wrap up the weekend with a 5 p.m. matchup with Felician on Saturday evening.
