FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State used a 16-3 scoring run late in the second half to pull away for a 93-81 win over Wheeling University on Saturday evening at Dan Cava Court inside Joe Retton Arena.
With the win, Fairmont State snapped its two-game skid and improved to 11-4 overall and 6-4 in league play. WU fell to 9-5 overall and 6-4 in the league.
Fairmont State shot nearly 50 percent from the field and had three 20-point scoring performances in the win. Wheeling shot 39 percent from the field, including a 6-of-21 performance from behind the arc. Fairmont State also held a 39-37 advantage on the glass.
Kenzie Melko-Marshall finished the afternoon with 23 points and eight rebounds, while
Cole VonHandorf equaled his scoring performance with 23 points and four rebounds.
Isaiah Sanders also had a big day with 20 points and eight rebounds, shooting 7-of-11 from the field.
Dale Bonner and
Przemyslaw Golek also reached double-figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Jarett Haines paced the Cardinals with 23 points and five rebounds. Jordan Reid also recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The game featured 18 lead changes and 12 ties, although Fairmont State held the lead for 25:48.
Fairmont State will return to action on Wednesday evening at Davis & Elkins. Tip is set for 7:30.
