ELKINS, W.Va. -- Fairmont State edged Davis & Elkins to record a 76-73 Mountain East Conference win over the Senators on Wednesday night at the McDonnell Center.
With the victory, Fairmont State avenged an early season loss to D&E and improved to 12-4 overall and 7-4 in MEC play. The Senators fell to 5-12 overall and 3-8 in the league.
Leading by three at 68-65 with 6:30 to play, Fairmont State's
Dale Bonner scored seven-straight points to push the Falcons' lead to 10 with 3:59 remaining. Following a timeout, the Senators made a run of their own, though, scoring the next eight points to get to within two with over a minute still to play.
On the next Fairmont State possession, D&E got the turnover it needed, but could not convert on the offensive end and
Kenzie Melko-Marshall got the rebound and was fouled. He made 1-of-2 from the line, and Fairmont State elected to foul on the defensive end rather than give the Senators a three-point attempt. The first free throw attempt would not go down for D&E, and
Seth Younkin pulled down the rebound and tossed the ball down the court as time expired.
Bonnner finished with 22 points and six rebounds for the Falcons.
Przemyslaw Golek added 17 points and five rebounds, scoring 15 of his 17 points in the opening half. The Falcons also got 14 points and five rebounds from
Isaiah Sanders, and nine points and four assists from
Cole VonHandorf.
Fairmont State shot nearly 48 percent from the field and scored 20 points-off turnovers in the victory. D&E shot just under 44 percent from the field, and nearly half of their field goals came from behind the arc (13).
Donte Doleman and Patrick Wilburn each had 17 points to lead D&E. Wilburn added 12 rebounds to record the double-double. Erkam Kiris also chipped in 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Emre Yildirim contributed 13 more points.
Fairmont State returns to action on Sunday afternoon against Frostburg State. Tip is set for 4 p.m. at Allegany College of Maryland.
