Kotchman Nets 29, Falcons Roll To Home Win Over WV State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Sierra Kotchman hit eight three-pointers and finished with 29 points as Fairmont State defeated West Virginia State, 102-69, on Wednesday night at Dan Cava Court inside Joe Retton Arena. The 102 points scored is a new season-high for the Falcons.
 
With the victory, Fairmont State improved to 11-8 overall and 8-5 in Mountain East Conference play. WV State fell to 7-12 overall and 5-8 in league play.
 
Fairmont State scored 30 points in the opening quarter after shooting red-hot in the first 10 minutes of play at nearly 58 percent from the floor. Leading by 17 at the break, Fairmont State ran its lead to 30+ in the second half after outscoring the Yellow Jackets 28-11 coming out of the locker room in the third quarter.
 
The Falcons had 29 assists on their 38 field goals on the night, and also protected the ball with just 12 turnovers. Fairmont State shot 46 percent from the field in the win, including an impressive 18-of-41 from behind the arc (43.9%).
 
Defensively, the Falcons held the Yellow Jackets to just 37 percent from the field and 29 percent from three (7-of-24).
 
Kotchman had six assists and three rebounds to go with her 29 points. Kamrin Weimer just missed a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds, as the junior added six more 3-pointers for the Falcons during the win. Presley Tuttle came off the bench to add 14, and Rachel Laskody had 15 points and six rebounds in the post.
 
Chloe Cheresne had a team-best 19 points for West Virginia State. Charity Shears chipped in 14, while Hannah Shriver added 12 in the losing effort.
 
Fairmont State will hit the road on Saturday afternoon for a crucial MEC showdown at the University of Charleston. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
