Charleston Closes Out Fairmont State, 88-78

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charleston shot nearly 60 percent from the field and hit 50 percent of its three-pointers in an 88-78 win over Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon at the Wehrle Innovation Center in Charleston.
 
With the victory, UC improved to 16-4 overall and 11-3 in the league. Fairmont fell to 11-9 overall and 8-6 in MEC play.
 
UC, who led 44-40 at halftime, pushed its lead to as many as 16 late in the second half as the Falcons were forced to play from behind during the final 20 minutes of action. UC also outrebounded the Falcons 34-23, and held a 54-26 scoring advantage in the paint.
 
Fairmont State shot 48.3 percent from the field and also hit 12 three-pointers in the setback.
 
Kamrin Weimer paced the Falcons with 21 points.  Sierra Kotchman and Brooke Kurucz added 18 points apiece, while Rachel Laskody notched a team-high 10 rebounds to go with six points for Fairmont State. Presley Tuttle was also in the starting lineup for the Falcons and finished with nine points, all from behind the arc.

Erykah Russell drained 24 points and hauled in 14 rebounds (three offensive, 11 defensive) for the Golden Eagles.  Anna Hayton added 23 points and seven boards in the win, followed by Dakota Reeves with 18.
 
Fairmont State will return to action on Wednesday evening at Glenville State. Start time is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Waco Center.
