FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State used a balanced scoring attack and shot over 50 percent from the field in an 80-69 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night at Dan Cava Court inside Joe Retton Arena.
With the victory, Fairmont State improves to 21-6 overall and 15-6 in Mountain East Conference play. The Falcons are now locked into the No. 3 seed during next week's MEC Tournament in Wheeling. West Virginia Wesleyan falls to 10-17 overall and 9-12 following the loss. The Bobcats are currently in seventh place in the league standings.
Fairmont State held a 38-30 lead at the break, but couldn't shake free from the Bobcats until a 10-2 run midway through the second half pushed its lead from six to 14 with 10:54 to go. Late in the second half, the Falcons would lead by as many as 20 before settling for the 11-point margin of victory.
Fairmont State shot 51 percent from the field and drained eight three-pointers in the victory. Meanwhile on the defensive end, the Falcons held the Bobcats to just 34 percent from the field (23-of-68) and 19 percent from behind the arc (7-of-37).
Both teams turned the ball over 19 times.
Isaiah Sanders paced the Falcons with 17 points and five rebounds.
Dale Bonner had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kenzie Melko Marshall tossed in 15 more and
Przemyslaw Golek had 10.
The Falcons scored 27 points on the fast break in the victory.
WVWC was led by 19 points and seven rebounds from Jaylin Reed. Daylin Lee scored 17 and pulled down eight rebounds for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats had 18 offensive rebounds and scored 24 second-chance points in the game.
Fairmont State will return to action on Saturday afternoon when Frostburg State comes to town on Alumni Day. Tip is set for 4 p.m.
