FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State's late rally came up short on Saturday afternoon at Dan Cava Court inside Joe Retton Arena, as Frostburg State picked up a 79-70 upset victory over the Falcons on senior day.
The Bobcats (6-22, 5-17 MEC) held Fairmont State to just 29 percent from the field (19-of-65), and outrebounded the Falcons by a 44-33 margin. Frostburg shot 48 percent from the field and knocked-down 24-of-28 free throw attempts in the win.
Following Saturday's setback, the league office announced that Fairmont State (15-13, 12-10 MEC) had clinched the No. 6 seed in next week's Mountain East Conference Tournament. Fairmont State will open tournament play against third-seeded Charleston (22-6, 17-5 MEC) on Thursday afternoon at Wesbanco Arena in Wheeling. Tip is set for 2:15 p.m. (

After trailing by as many as 14 points in the second half, Fairmont State rallied to grab a 68-67 lead over Frostburg after
Rachel Laskody connected on a free throw with 3:27 remaining. However, the Bobcats regrouped and outscored the Falcons 12-2 in the final three minutes of the game to secure the win. Victoria Diggs scored eight of the 12 points during the stretch from the free throw line in the final minute of play.
Sierra Kotchman led the way for the Falcons with 29 points, which included a 7-of-15 performance from behind the arc. In the game, Kotchman went over 1,600 career points and tied the Fairmont State career record for made 3-points with 258 (Kristen Gattuso, 2001-05).
Senior
Brooke Kurucz also reached double-figures for the Falcons with 18 points, while fellow senior
Rachel Laskody finished with eight points and five rebounds. Kurucz and Laskody were both honored before the game as the duo played their final game as Falcons' inside Joe Retton Arena.
Diggs led Frostburg State in the victory with a game-high 33 points. Diggs went 16-of-16 from the free throw line. Morgan Dombroski also added 20 points and six rebounds for Frostburg State.
The teams combined for 47 fouls and 57 free throws were attempted on the afternoon.
