Fast Start Propels Fairmont State to 100-60 Victory Over D&E

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State scored 37 points in the first quarter and rolled to 100-60 Mountain East Conference win over Davis & Elkins on Monday evening at Joe Retton Arena.
 
The Falcons shot over 60 percent from the field, made five 3-pointers, and forced 12 turnovers in the opening quarter to open up a quick 27-point advantage after 10 minutes of play.
 
With the win, Fairmont State improved to 2-4 both overall and in the MEC. D&E fell to 1-5 (1-5 MEC) following the loss.
 
Sierra Kotchman scored a game-high 28 points after shooting 10-of-16 from the field and 5-of-9 from behind the arc. The senior also passed out six assists.
 
Kotchman, who has scored 20+ points in five of six games this season, moved into fifth in school history in career scoring with 1,775 points in 94 career games for the Falcons. Kotchman passed Kara Morris (1,771) for fifth all-time during tonight's victory.
 
For the game, the Falcons shot 51 percent from the field (37-72) and 38 percent from behind the arc (11-29) to roll to the victory. The Falcons led by as many as 41 points in the fourth quarter.
 
Fairmont State was also active on the defensive end, forcing 27 Davis & Elkins turnovers. The Falcons turnover those turnovers in 36 points off turnovers and 28 points on the fast break. FSU also limited D&E to 33 percent from the field and just 1-of-13 from behind the arc (7.7%).
 
In addition to Kotchman's performance, the Falcons also got 17 points and six rebounds from Jalen Gibbs, and 17 points, three rebounds and two steals from Alyssa DeAngelo. Katy Darnell also chipped in 13, and Bre Wilson just missed a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.
 
Jamiyah Johnson was the only double-figure scorer for the Senators with 24 points to go along with a game-high 18 rebounds. Johnson surpassed the 1,000-point career scoring mark in Monday's loss to the Falcons. Peyton Mohler also chipped in eight points for D&E.
 
D&E held a 55-39 rebounding advantage in the loss, including 27 offensive rebounds.
 
Fairmont State will now prepare for a 5 p.m. matchup with Concord University on Wednesday evening at Joe Retton Arena. Concord comes into the game with a 3-2 overall record.
