FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State rallied from a 17-point fourth quarter deficit and came away with a 90-85 overtime win over Concord on Wednesday night at Joe Retton Arena.
Trailing 72-55 with just 5:43 to go, Fairmont State closed the game on a furious 22-5 run to send the game to overtime.
Alyssa DeAngelo sparked the run with nine points, and
Sierra Kotchman had six during the stretch. The Falcons were 5-of-8 from the field and 11-for-11 from the free throw line during that stretch to help knot the game and send it to OT tied 77-77.
DeAngelo scored 13 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter of play.
In addition, the Falcons pressured the ball with a press during the late stages of the game and forced five Concord turnovers during their 22-5 scoring run. FSU finished the game with 23 total points off turnovers.
Fairmont State trailed by two, 85-83, with 1:38 left in overtime, but back-to-back buckets for Kotchman put the Falcons back in front by two. Then on the defensive end, Fairmont State forced Concord into a pair of empty possessions which led to free throws for the Falcons - making the final margin 90-85.
Kotchman scored eight of Fairmont State's 13 points in overtime and scored 14 total points in the fourth quarter and overtime.
The Falcons shot 35-of-38 from the free throw line in the game, including just one miss in the fourth quarter and overtime (16-17).
Kotchman finished the evening with 28 points to lead Fairmont State (3-4, 3-4 MEC). With the performance, Kotchman has now tied
Hailey Garrett (2011-15) for fourth in Fairmont State women's basketball history with 1,803 career points. Kotchman shot 8-of-14 from the field and a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe in the win.
DeAngelo also had another big outing for the Falcons by totaling 19 in the game, and
Katy Darnell finished with a double-double with 10 points to go with 11 rebounds.
Jertaya Hall also chipped in nine points and six rebounds, and senior
Presley Tuttle came off the bench and added nine points as well.
Concord's Riley Fitzwater had 20 points and six rebounds before fouling out with 56 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Maddie Ratcliff also scored 18, while a trio of Mountain Lions finished with 11 (Maggie Guynn, Gracie Robinson and Jaisah Smith). The Mountain Lions dropped to 3-3 (3-3 MEC) on the year with the loss.
Concord outshot Fairmont State 44.9%-to-36.2%, but the Falcons shot nearly 55 percent in the final 15 minutes of play. Fairmont State also held a 43-42 advantage on the glass.
The Falcons will now prepare for a 2 p.m. showdown with 5-1 and nationally-ranked Glenville State at the Waco Center.
