GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- The No. 14-ranked Glenville State women's basketball team used a big third quarter to take control, and went on to pick up 103-75 win over Fairmont State at the Waco Center on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, GSC improves to 6-1 on the year, earning its fifth win in a row. Fairmont State slipped to 3-5 on the season and saw its two-game winning streak snapped in the loss.
In the game, senior guard
Sierra Kotchman scored a team-high 29 points and pulled down five rebounds to lead the Falcons. With the performance, Kotchman moved into third in Fairmont State women's basketball history with 1,832 career points. She will now need to surpass the 2,000-point mark to catch Kaitlin Snyder (2,056) and Kristen Gattuso (2,041) for the top spot on the scoring list.
In the first half, Fairmont State shot nearly 58 percent from the floor and closed an early 16-point (37-21, 5:00 mark) advantage by GSC to just six points at the half. Kotchman paced the Falcons in the first half with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field.
Glenville State shot just 35 percent in the opening half, but forced 18 first-half turnovers and had 11 offensive rebounds to help build the early lead.
Leading 47-41 coming out of the locker room, Glenville State shot 53 percent from the field in the third quarter and outscored the Falcons 28-12 in the period to take command of the game. During the quarter, Fairmont State made just five field goals and shot just 29 percent from the field.
The Pioneers also scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to push the final score to 103-75 for the home win.
Glenville State forced 27 turnovers in the game and had a 25-6 advantage in fast-break points. The Pioneers also capitalized on 15 second-chance points in the game.
In addition, GSC held a 48-42 rebounding advantage in the game - including a 29-20 advantage in the second half.
In addition to Kotchman's big day, the Falcons also got 15 points and nine rebounds from
Jalen Gibbs, and nine points and seven rebounds from
Katy Darnell.
Re'Shawna Stone poured in a game-high 30 points and had five rebounds for GSC. Zakiyah Winfield had 27 points to go over 1,000 for her career, and also had 11 rebounds to record the double-double. Kaylee Pierce and Victoria Brown each had 10 points off the bench for the Pioneers.
Fairmont State will now be idle until Wednesday evening, when nationally-ranked Charleston visits Joe Retton Arena for a 5 p.m. tip. UC is currently 8-0 on the season and is No. 6 in the latest D2SIDA National Media Poll.
