SALEM, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State swim teams split a dual meet with Salem University on Saturday afternoon to open the 2021 season.

The Fairmont State women earned a 135-90 victory, taking first place in nine of the 14 events that were swam this afternoon. On the men's side, the Falcons dropped a 147-112 final score against the Tigers. The Fairmont State men took first place in four different events on Saturday, while also earning eight second-place finishes at the meet.

Women: Fairmont State 135, Salem 90

Zsofi Bevardi led the Fairmont State women with a pair of first-place finishes in the win. Bevardi turned in a time of 10:58.81 in the 1000 freestyle to earn a victory early in the meet, and added a second win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.00.
Kaitlyn Stumpf also had a big day for the Falcons in the water, taking first place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:47.74. Stumpf also finished second in both the 1000 freestyle and 200 IM events.

Kayla Fogle was also impressive in a trio of events for the Falcons this afternoon, earning the win in the 200 IM with a time of 2:27.08, and taking second-place finishes in both the 50 breaststroke and 100 butterfly.

In addition,
Alexis Antol and
Courtney Deem each turned in a pair of first or second place finishes during the meet. Antol won the 50 backstroke event with a time of 29.46, and took second in the 50 freestyle. Deem was victorious in the 200 freestyle event with a time of 2:06.84, and also finished second in the 100 backstroke.
Kayla Day also had a first-place finish for the Falcons this afternoon with a time of 31.82 in the 50 butterfly.

Fairmont State also swept a pair of relay events, winning both the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

Salem was victorious in just five events on the women's side.

On the men's side, Salem was victorious in 10 of the 14 events, with Fairmont State earning wins in the 200 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle, and 100 breaststroke.

Majester Abdul-Jalil paced the Falcons by earning first-place finishes in both the 50 and 100 breaststroke events, and took second in the 200 IM. Abdul-Jalil had a time of 27.09 in the 50 breaststroke, and a time of 59.16 in the 100 breaststroke.
Pedro Gaspar was also impressive in a trio of events this afternoon, finishing first in the 200 freestyle (1:48.51) and second in both the 50 backstroke and 100 freestyle.

Nathan Fubio was the third FSU swimmer to earn a first-place finish on Saturday with a time of 22.97 in the 50 freestyle.

Fairmont State will return to the pool next Friday with as quad meet at Alderson Broaddus. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
