FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Sierra Kotchman broke the school record in total points in the first half of the game inside Joe Retton Arena for Fairmont State. Winston-Salem State grabbed the 74-69 victory over the Fighting Falcons in the Atlantic Region Women's Basketball Crossover Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
Kotchman eclipsed the record once held by Kailtin Snyder at 2,056 total points in her four years as a Falcon with Kotchman notching the recording the first half at 2,058 total points. Kotchman finished with 21 points on the afternoon and collected three rebounds against the Rams.
The Rams of Winston-Salem State and Fairmont State traded baskets early in the game with WSSU having the four-point lead after the first quarter at 16-12.
WSSU pushed their advantage to 12 points twice in the second quarter before
Jalen Gibbs hit one of her two free throws before half to set the score at 31-23 in favor of the Rams.
Out of the break, WSSU again built a lead now at 17 points before the Falcons made a comeback late in the third with
Jertaya Hall making a basket with 2:20 left in the third with the score at 47-39 in favor of the Rams. Kotchman hit a three to end the third quarter of regulation and trimmed the Ram lead back to eight points at 51-43.
The Falcons would not go away as they closed the margin to one point off a basket from
Katy Darnell, but WSSU's Amaya Tucker hit a three-pointer with 5:26 left to play to regain a seven point advantage.
Fairmont State got within four points as
Madeline Huffman hit one of two from the charity stripe as the Rams handed the Falcons their first loss of the season by the final of 74-69.
Fairmont State was 21-58 (36.2 %) from the field as the Falcons made nine three-pointers inside Joe Retton Arena. WSSU shot 47.5% (28-59) from the floor and was 4-11 from beyond the arc. The Rams had the advanatge inside with 40 points in the paint to the Falcons' 20.
Kotchman led the Falcons with a game-high 21 points as
Alyssa DeAngelo followed with 15 points and Darnell chipped in nine points.
Fairmont State (1-1, 0-0 MEC) is back in action on Thursday, November 18th when they head to California (PA) for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
