Five Falcons in Double Figures in 89-63 Win over Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. -- Five Fairmont State women's basketball scored in double-digits as the Fighting Falcons went on the road and defeated Davis & Elkins 89-63 in their Mountain East Conference opener. Alyssa DeAngelo now has 300 career points as a Falcon as well.

The Maroon and White are now 2-2 overall and 1-0 in MEC play while D&E falls to 1-3 on the year and 0-1 in conference action.

DeAngelo paced the Falcons in scoring with 20 points on 7-10 shooting from the floor and she was 2-4 from three-point range. Jalen Gibbs followed with 16 points and collected five rebounds on the afternoon. Jertaya Hall had 13 points and four assists on the day and Sierra Kotchman chipped in 12 points on 5-10 shooting. Madeline Huffman rounded out the Falcons in double-figures with 10 points.

The Falcons saw themselves down early as the Senators knocked in a three to double their lead to 11-5 in the first quarter Fairmont State regained the lead on a layup by Gibbs at the 4:56 mark. The Falcons retook the 20-18 advantage in the first quarter as Bre Wilson converted a layup with 2:27 to play in the first quarter. Fairmont State added to their lead as Kamrin Weimer hit a three before the buzzer sounded as the Falcons were up 28-18 at the end of the first.

Fairmont State cruised the rest of the way through the three quarters as Hall collected a fastbreak layup in the second quarter to give the Falcons a 19-point cushion with 1:46 to play in the first half. The Maroon and White went into halftime with the 51-36 edge after two baskets by the Senators to end the half.

The Falcons pushed their lead to 24 points as Huffman made another basket for Fairmont with 1:35 to play in the third quarter. Hall made one more free-throw to give the Falcons an 89-63 victory in the MEC opener.

Fairmont State shot 51.6% (33-64) from the field with six made from beyond the arc. The Falcons also went 17-25 from the charity stripe and held the upper hand in points off turnovers (35-13). Fairmont State forced the Senators to turn the ball over 25 times inside the McDonnell Center.

For Davis & Elkins, Marissa Berlin had 13 points on the day going 6-8 from the field as Peyton Mohler joined her teammate with 12 points in 32 minutes of action.

The Fighting Falcons (2-2, 1-0 MEC) return to Joe Retton Arena for a MEC matchup with West Virginia Wesleyan (2-1, 1-0 MEC) on Tuesday, November 23rd. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
