FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Fighting Falcons women's soccer team fell to the University of Charleston 1-0 in double overtime on Duvall-Rosier Field on Wednesday nght.
In Mountain East Conference action, Laura Vierhout found the back of the net in the 106th minute off a corner kick that was partially deflected by Fairmont State defender
The Falcons are now 7-7-2 overall and 7-6-2 in MEC play while UC is now 13-4 and 12-3 in conference.
Throughout the first half, both sides were even with possession with Charleston having four shots on goal with all four being collected by
Taylor Kennedy. Fairmont State was unable to get a shot on goal in the first and both squads went into the halftime break deadlocked at zero.
In the start of the second half,
Kiera Kuzinski sent a shot towards goal by UC's Kaylee Hensley was able to grab the shot and keep the score even. Kuzinski collected two more shots on goal but was unable to find the back of the net through 90 minutes of regulation.
MacKenzie Gillispie had the best strike of the night as her shot barely missed the target as the ball hit the top of the woodwork and the clock hit zeroes to end regulation.
In the first overtime period, the Golden Eagles had a chance on goal as Audrey Miller sent a ball to the gloves of Kennedy in the 98th minute and finished the first overtime with no more quality chances.
Charleston earned a corner kick in the 106th minute of play and they converted as Vierhout found the back of the goal to seize the victory on Wednesday evening.
UC outshot Fairmont 12-8 on the night with eight shots on goal to the Falcons' three. Kennedy had seven stops in the contest with Charleston's Hensley having three in 106 minutes.
Fairmont State (7-7-2, 7-6-2 MEC) rounds out the regular season on Saturday, November 6th when they travel to Frostburg State. Kick off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium.
