GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- Fairmont State used a well-balanced ground attack to down Glenville State 24-14 in Mountain East Conference play on Saturday afternoon.
The Fighting Falcons improved their record to 4-6 and 4-5 in MEC action while GSC is now 2-7 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
Myles Miree led the rushing attack with 28 carries for 120 yards and scoring once.
Donovan Washington carried the ball 11 times for 34 yards and one touchdown and
Michael Floria rushed the ball for 29 yards and finding the endzone once.
The Pioneers received the ball for the first half and earned a first down before Fairmont's defense made them punt after their drive stalled the next three plays.
The Falcon offense started their first offensive drive on their own 29 and used a big pass play from Floria to
Joshawn Lewis for 36 yards to get inside the Glenville State territory. Fairmont State got to the six-yard line before the Pioneers forced a 29-yard field goal from
Colin Harvath in which he converted for points.
After the first quarter, the Falcons led the Pioneers 3-0 with both sides trading possessions on Saturday afternoon. In the start of the second quarter, GSC's Josh Jones missed from 48 yards to give Fairmont decent field position at their own 31-yard line.
Fairmont State offense used an eight play, 69-yard drive that converted into six points as Washington found the endzone from six yards out to put the Falcons up 10-0 after the extra point was converted by Harvath.
The Falcon defense forced another miss from Jones of Glenville and drove the ball to Glenville's 38 yard line before Floria's pass was intercepted with one second left in the first half.
Out of the break, Floria and the Falcon offense converted on a five play, 67 yard drive for six points as Floria ran from one yard out to give Fairmont the 17-0 lead with 12:22 left to play in the third quarter.
After another Glenville State drive that stalled, Floria found
Shawn Harris for 57 yards and three plays later Miree found paydirt to give the Falcons the 24-0 lead.
GSC would not go away as they scored two quick touchdowns of their in the third quarter and brought the score to 24-14 in favor of Fairmont.
The two sides would not score anymore points inside I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium as the Falcons used two possessions in the fourth to grab their fourth victory of the season.
Floria went 10-18 for 263 passing yards in addition to his running game with
Javon Hayes hauling in four receptions for 97 yards and Harris having four catches for 88 yards the day.
Joshawn Lewis caught two passes for 78 yards to complete the 10 completed passes via Floria.
On the defensive side,
Brocton Blair led the way holding to 87 total rushing yards and the defense tallied two sacks on Saturday afternoon. Blair had eight total tackles with 0.5 tackles for loss in the victory. Dalton Demspey and
Danny Anige each chipped in six total tackles in the contest with Dempsey finishing with one tackle for loss.
Glenville's Timothy Hetzel went 16-for-34 on the day for 184 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. Orion Bonner was his favorite target with 10 receptions for 106 yards as Dylan Day and Javon Butler converted Hetzel's passes for touchdowns.
Fairmont State (4-6, 4-5 MEC) returns to Duvall-Rosier Field on Friday, November 12th for Senior Day as they host Wheeling University (5-5, 5-4) for 7 p.m. kickoff.
