CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Women's Basketball took down the University of Charleston 68-61 on Wednesday night to improve to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in Mountain East Conference play.
Sierra Kotchman connected on her first three-pointer of the night to give the Fighting Falcons a 7-3 lead over the Golden Eagles in the first quarter. The Falcons held the Charleston to only 11 points in the first ten minutes of the contest and carried the 14-11 into the second quarter of play.
Bre Wilson hit a three for the Falcons to start the second quarter and pushed the Falcon lead to six points with 9:27 to play. The Golden Eagles tied the game at 21 apiece after 8 consecutive points with 4:57 left in the first half. The Falcons answered with an 8-0 run of their own to regain an eight-point advantage, 29-21. Fairmont State entered the halftime break with a five-point lead after the two sides traded baskets to end the first half.
The Golden Eagles started the second half on fire as they took the 39-37 lead with 7:25 to play in the third quarter and grew the six points after a made layup from Clarrissa Francis. The Falcons cut the lead to two at the end of the period with
Katy Darnell collecting two free throws to make it 47-45 in favor of Charleston.
Madeline Huffman opened the final quarter with a made jumper to knot the score at 47 and
Bre Wilson followed with two points from the charity stripe to give the Falcons the two-point advantage.
Alyssa DeAngelo connected from deep to give the Falcons the five-point cushion, but Charleston's Dakota Reeves tied the contest at 57 with a three pointer.
Charleston grabbed the lead one more time after a made basket from Trinity Palacio at 61-60. Fairmont State closed the game with eight free throws to end the contest and claimed the 68-61 victory inside the Wehrle Innovation Center.
The Falcons were 32.3% shooting on the night as they made 20 baskets out of 62 attempts. Fairmont State had 10 three-points on the night and were 18-22 (81.8%) from the charity stripe. Charleston was held to a shooting percentage of 38.3% (24-63) on the evening and only made three from beyond the arc.
DeAngelo led all scorers with 20 points going 6-16 from the field and made 6-7 from the free-throw line. Huffman followed DeAngelo with 14 in the contest as she went 4-6 from the floor and 4-4 from the line.
Sierra Kotchman joined her teammates in double-digits with 11 and four rebounds.
Fairmont State held the advantage in points off turnovers (25-8) as they turned the Golden Eagles over 17 times in their offensive end.
Fairmont State Women's Basketball (4-2, 3-0 MEC) returns home Saturday afternoon to take on West Virginia State (5-1, 1-1 MEC) at 2:00 p.m. inside Joe Retton Arena.
