Fairmont State Uses Fourth Quarter to Down West Virginia State, 85-77

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Women's Basketball used a 11-point margin in the fourth quarter to get the victory over West Virginia State, 85-77, on Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play.

The Fighting Falcons improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in conference action while the Yellow Jackets are now 5-2 on the season and 1-2 in MEC play.

The two teams traded baskets early in the contest with WVSU grabbing the early six-point lead over the Falcons after a made basket from Caroline Scott with 3:25 to play in the first quarter. Fairmont State answered as they rattled off a 7-0 run to regain the 18-17 lead with 2:01 left in the first. The Yellow Jackets retook the lead with a 7-0 run of their own and ended the quarter up 24-18.

In the second quarter, Kamrin Weimer knocked in a three-pointer to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to five, but WVSU pushed the margin to double-digits after a made three from Zakorrah Russell. Fairmont State would not go away as they trimmed the lead to three points with 2:16 remaining in the half after free throw make from Katy Darnell. The Yellow Jackets went into the halftime break with their lead built back to seven points at 39-32 inside Joe Retton Arena.

Out of the break, Bre Wilson scored quickly for the Falcons and Alyssa DeAngelo drained a three to cut the lead to four for the Yellow Jackets with 9:02 to play. Sierra Kotchman added two more points to the Falcons' totals as they only trailed by one point with eight minutes to play in the third. WVSU went on another miniature run as they pushed their advantage to 11 points at the 3:46 mark. The Fighting Falcons answered quickly as Kotchman scored another triple and made the score, 58-57, in favor of the Yellow Jackets. WVSU collected two free throws at the end of the period to have a three-point advantage.

DeAngelo and the Falcons regained the lead after a made basket to push Fairmont State on top at 66-64 and the Falcons would not let go of the advantage the rest of the way. Darnell capped an 11-0 streak for Fairmont State as they held the 68-64 lead. Weimer collected another one beyond the arc as the Falcons pushed the margin to eight as they earned the 85-77 victory over the visitors from West Virginia State.

Fairmont State shot 50.0% (28-56) from the field and collected 11 three-pointers in Saturday's contest. The Falcons went 18-23 from the charity stripe to grab their fourth win in a row. Fairmont State held the advantage in fast break points, 18-5, over the Yellow Jackets and held WVSU to only five three-pointers in the game.

Weimer paced the Falcons with a season-best 23 points going 8-10 from the floor and 7-8 from beyond the arc. DeAngelo followed her fellow teammate with 18 points on 6-10 shooting. Darnell chipped in 16 points in the contest with five made field goals and was 5-6 from the free-throw line and had a game-high nine assists, a career-best. Jertaya Hall and Kotchman joined the Falcons in double-figures with Hall having 12 and Kotchman picking up 10 points to go along with five assists.

Fairmont State Women's Basketball (5-2, 4-0 MEC) welcomes Concord University (5-2, 2-2 MEC) on Wednesday night, December 8th at 5:30 p.m. inside Joe Retton Arena.
