Falcons' Comeback Falls Short in Overtime at Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- The Fighting Falcons scored 51 points in the second half to send the game to overtime against Glenville State, but the Pioneers pulled out the 99-96 victory on Monday in Mountain East Conference play.

Fairmont State is now 7-2 on the season and 4-2 in MEC action while GSC has an overall record of 4-4 and 2-3 in conference games.

Isaiah Sanders drained a three-pointer to give the Falcons the 9-5 advantage over the Pioneers with 16:39 left in the first half and Zyon Dobbs extended the lead to six points after a made basket with 15:34 to play. Glenville State regained the lead at the 13:19 mark and the Pioneers' Zane DeSouza capped off a 17-0 run for GSC to give Glenville State the 25-14 edge with 10:54 to play in the first.

Briggs Parris collected a three to cut the lead to five points, but the Pioneers built the advantage back to double-digits at 49-36 heading into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Falcons started to shoot lights out as Parris trimmed the Pioneer lead to four with 15:08 remaining in regulation and Cole VonHandorf added more pressure on GSC with their lead at 63-61 with 13:17 left.

Dobbs gave the Falcons the one-point margin over the Pioneers with 11:27 remaining in the second half as the two sides battled down the stretch. VonHandorf once again handed the lead to Fairmont State at 81-79 with 3:50 left on the scoreboard but Glenville State retook the one-point margin after a three-point play from John Williams.

Parris knocked in another clutch three to knot the score at 84-84 as George Mangas made one of two free throws to put the Falcons back up at 85-84. GSC's Williams hit another from beyond the arc as Seth Younkin sent the game to overtime with making his second free throw attempt with the score at 87 apiece.

In the overtime period, Pioneer John Williams collected another three to open the five minutes of play as the Falcons answered with three points of their own with Sanders adding a basket in the paint. Glenville State seized the lead once more and controlled the outcome of the contest as they picked up the 99-96 victory over Fairmont State inside the Waco Center on Monday afternoon.

Dobbs led all scorers on the floor with 26 points, a career-high, and had a double-double with 12 boards as Sanders joined Dobbs with 24 points. VonHandorf added 13 points to his season totals and Younkin picked up 10 points with 7 rebounds on the afternoon. Parris rounded out the Falcons in double-figures with 10 points on 4-9 shooting.

Glenville State had five scorers in double-digits with Nick Edwards leading the way for the Pioneers with 23 as John Williams collected 19 points in 43 minutes of action.

The Falcons went 35-70 (50.0%%) from the field and made 10 three-pointers in the fixture with 23 points coming via the fast break. The Pioneers shot 51.9% (40-77) from the floor and had nine from beyond the arc.

Fairmont State (7-2, 4-2 MEC) is back on the road Friday, December 17th at Felician University (4-3, 1-1 CACC) with the game slated for a 5 p.m. start in Rutherford, N.J.
